Yes. Indiana lets you keep your teen’s 50 supervised hours on paper or in an app, as long as they end up on State Form 54706, the Log of Supervised Driving Practice, signed and brought to the BMV. An app that fills in that form for you is accepted, and the Indiana BMV accepts the Drive Now app log.
The rule to follow
Your teen needs at least 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night, kept on a Log of Supervised Driving and presented when they apply for a license, as the BMV’s driver’s license page explains.
That log is State Form 54706, on the BMV’s driver’s license and permit forms page. Its instructions say completed hours must be entered on the approved log, and that you can attach more than one sheet. So the real question isn’t paper or app. It’s whether you end up holding the form.
Why it matters
An app that only shows a running total leaves someone copying every drive onto the paper form by hand before license day.
How it works in practice
- Drive Now turns your teen’s logged drives into State Form 54706, with each drive’s date and its day and night time entered. In the app it’s the 50-hour log, and you can download it or email it.
- For a teen under 18, a parent or legal guardian signs the affirmation on the form by hand, the same as on paper.
- Indiana Code 9-24-3-2.5 requires 10 night hours but doesn’t say when night starts, and the form’s NIGHT column doesn’t either. Every app has to pick a start time, so check how yours decides.
- Started on paper? Keep those sheets, log the rest in the app, and staple the paper sheets and the app’s form together for the branch.
What the practice gets you
A finished form on license day, filled in from the drives as they happened. You sign it, your teen brings it, and the hours count. If you’re choosing an app this week, open its log screen first and look for the form itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Indiana BMV accept driving log apps?
The BMV needs the hours on State Form 54706. It accepts the Drive Now app log, which fills in that form. For any other app, check that it gives you the form itself, not only a total.
Do I still have to sign anything if I use an app?
Yes. For a teen under 18, a parent or legal guardian signs the affirmation on the form by hand.
Can I switch from a paper log to an app partway through?
Yes. Keep the paper sheets for the drives you already logged, log the rest in the app, and staple the paper sheets and the app’s form together for the branch.
How does an app decide what counts as night driving?
Indiana law doesn’t define night, so each app sets a start time. Drive Now sorts every drive into day and night for you.
What Drive Now offers
Drive Now is a free app from a working Indiana driving school. It logs each drive by GPS, sorts the time into day and night, and fills in State Form 54706 for you. It’s on the App Store and Google Play.
